Making Spring/Summer Trends Work For You
Spring has sprung and the high street is full of funky new fashions for spring and summer – so it’s time to ditch that winter wardrobe of black and grey and get shopping! With tempting trends out there ranging from smocks and metallics to maxi dresses, it’s easy to pick a style that flatters your body, no matter what shape or size you are.
For a boho look that’s easy to wear, try a smock top or tunic – ideal for anyone wanting to disguise a bit of a tum! You’ll find racks of gorgeous smocks at Lakeside stores including New Look, Miss Selfridge and Primark. Skinny minnies can wear leggings underneath, while curvy girls should team their smocks with wide-leg trousers or jeans. To take the look into the evening, go for an embellished tunic from Wallis or Debenhams at Lakeside.
White jeans are my must-buy for this season - incredibly versatile, you can dress them up or down and wear them with other key spring/summer items, from brights and metallics to prints. Try River Island at Lakeside for a great selection of jeans. If you’re tall and slim, show off your legs in a cropped pair and wear with ballet pumps. If you have a fuller figure, go for long leg jeans and wear with heels or wedges, which will lengthen the leg and make you look slimmer.
Maxi dresses are another huge trend for summer. Flowing empire-line dresses are perfect for taller girls, while dresses with a higher neckline will flatter those who are flat-chested. Principles at Lakeside has a fantastic maxi dress in giraffe print – THE hot print for the summer! If you’re on the shorter side, make sure you choose a fitted dress - one that’s too wide and flowing will make you look shorter. Teaming it with platform wedges will boost height and add some funky edge to the outfit.
If you’re not keen on the maxi trend, high hems and hotpants are also in this year – head to New Look or Warehouse at Lakeside for sexy shorts and skirts. If you’re worried about flashing your pins then why not wear leggings or footless tights underneath? This will spice up your outfit and also hide any flaws.
The safari look is popular again this season, and shades of burnt orange and earthy brown will flatter those with paler skin. Take a walk on the wild side with a safari jacket from Linea at House of Fraser or Monsoon at Lakeside.
The high street is awash with bright citrus and neon colours for summer – if you’re dark or olive-skinned then you can carry this look off perfectly. If you’re paler, go for coloured accessories – costume jewellery, belts, bags or shoes – that will brighten up your outfit without washing you out. Claire’s Accessories and Accessorize at Lakeside have fantastic selections of bright baubles.
Metallics are another big trend, but beware of overdoing it. Team a metallic top with jeans, or stick to accessories. Topshop at Lakeside has a wide range of metallic tops, bags and shoes, which will see you through the summer in style.
