Summer’s here and since its opening in June, The Boardwalk at Lakeside Shopping Centre, overlooking Alexandra Lake, has become a favourite venue for some lovely al fresco dining. To ensure you look picture perfect for all those summer lunch dates and evening cocktail events, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, Angela Poplett, is here to give her experts tips on how to dine out in style this summer.
A stunning summer dress is a versatile and easy option for al fresco dining, and there are plenty of great styles in the shops at the moment. Try a flattering empire-line, knee-length sundress for daytime eating occasions or a maxi dress for evening – glam yours up with foxy wedges and beads or jewellery. Head to the new Peacocks store at Lakeside for a fantastic selection of summer dresses that won’t break the bank.
Flowing empire-line maxi dresses are perfect for taller girls, while dresses with a higher neckline will flatter those who are flat-chested. Principles and Miss Selfridge at Lakeside both have a wide range of stylish dresses in beautiful colours. If you’re on the shorter side, make sure you choose a fitted dress - one that’s too wide and flowing will make you look shorter. Teaming it with platform wedges will boost your height and add some funky edge to the outfit.
If you’re after a more sophisticated look for a smart dinner occasion such as a business lunch or a first date, then go for a shift or tunic dress. Very fashionable right now, these dresses are also incredibly versatile. They will keep you cool as they’re light and easy to wear, and they’re also easy to accessorise and will go with everything. To add a splash of colour to your wardrobe, try a printed shift dress from H&M or Principles at Lakeside.
For an easy to wear alternative to dresses, try a smock top or tunic – ideal for anyone wanting to disguise a bit of a tum! You’ll find racks of gorgeous smocks at Lakeside stores including New Look, Miss Selfridge and Primark. If you’re feeling brave, wear them with leggings or shorts underneath, or for a more covered-up look try a pair of linen trousers or jeans – a perfect look for a casual lunch. When it comes to cover-ups, cropped jackets are a great look for summer, so head to Dorothy Perkins and Gap at Lakeside for a great selection. Alternatively, a light mac or trench coat is an essential item for al fresco dining and will add instant chic to your outfit. River Island has a wide array to choose from.
There are some seriously stylish summer shoes out there - if you’re a fan of flats then go for jewelled or metallic sandals to add some gorgeous glamour to your outfit. Ballet pumps are still in fashion and will go with everything - Topshop has a huge selection of pumps in a wide range of colours and materials.
Alternatively, try a pair of wedges - THE shoe for the summer - which will look fantastic with everything from shorts and jeans to dresses. Try a pair from Dune or Faith. Alternatively, keep your feet looking fabulous by slipping on a pair of slingback or peep-toe heels.
